Chapter Eighteen

I’d hoped to hear from James by Christmas. It was a holiday after all. A time to wish those you care about goodwill, to reflect on days past with fondness and cherish family and friends. But as the day neared, I’d still received nothing. No card. No letter. No small gift like he’d sent the past two years.

My disappointment and distraction was evident in the way I lost interest in nearly everything but flying, so much so that I got my first B on a test, walked out of our bay one morning without my boots and almost missed my last chance to send off the Christmas gifts I’d bought, too preoccupied by thoughts of being unimportant and forgotten. I’d even forgotten to thank Officer Wilson for the model plane when I ran into him the day after he’d left it for me.

I hadn’t realized how morose I’d gotten until Tanya commented on it. The last straw, however, was when I’d voluntarily called my mother.

“You haven’t received a reply since when?” she asked.

“Since you forwarded the last letter I received at the house.”

“That was quite a while ago. And you wrote him back promptly? You didn’t berate him for taking so long, did you? Men hate to be bothered by such things.”

“Of course not, Mama.”

“Did you send him anything?”

“I did. A card and a leather-bound notebook.”

“Well, darling. I suppose at this point, it’s all you can do.”

I sighed. “Thank you, Mama. Is Dad home?”

“He’s not. I swear, ever since you left for training that man has decided he can work all hours of the day and night. As if he can’t possibly tolerate dinner conversation without you. I know I’m not as well-informed about the news as you always are, but I do have top-notch conversational skills.”

“I’m sure it’s not you, Mama. Everyone is in a state these days. Who’s to say at this late stage the war doesn’t end up getting brought to our shores after all?”

“If it does we’ll handle it. We made it through the Depression. We’ll make it through this damn war.”
